Mis-qall Lamp Symbolizes a Circular Economy based on Local Wisdom
Pekalongan — Two students from MAN Insan Cendekia Pekalongan, Ryan Zakinnaja Giggs and Bima Irfan Zidny, have successfully created an environmentally friendly innovation that combines technology, art, and spirituality. Their creation, the Mis-qall Lamp, is a multifunctional relaxation lamp-box made from corn cob waste, decorated with Pekalongan batik motifs and Islamic calligraphy.
This innovation stems from two major issues: the rise in mental health disorders in adolescents and the abundance of underutilized agricultural waste. According to the 2022 I-NAMHS survey, approximately 15.5 million Indonesian adolescents experience stress, anxiety, or sleep disorders. Meanwhile, Indonesia produces more than 5.7 million tons of corn cob waste annually.
Addressing this challenge, Ryan and Bima integrated aromatherapy, relaxation light, and religious music into one device. Tests using the MUSE brainwave sensor showed a decrease in users' stress levels within 5–10 minutes. "The combination of the lavender scent and the recitation of Quranic verses helped me fall asleep faster," said one of the trial participants.
This product comes in three variants: Calm Bloom to relieve stress, Deep Dream to improve sleep quality, and Flow Learn to help focus on learning. Each uses a different light color and natural scents such as lavender, peppermint, and rosemary.
The design of this lamp is inspired by the shape of a Joglo roof, typical of Central Java, and uses materials made from corn cobs and aesthetically processed used wood. Each unit features Pekalongan calligraphy and batik, creating a harmony between function, art, and religious values.
More than just a craft, the Mis-qall Lamp symbolizes a circular economy based on local wisdom—transforming waste into a high-value product and a mental therapy tool. This project was developed through a Research and Development method with teachers from MAN IC Pekalongan and with the support of Rumah Atsiri Indonesia, the essential oil supplier.
"We want to show that innovation doesn't have to be high-tech. With creativity and concern for the environment, we can create real solutions," said Ryan.
