Transforming Wood Waste into Furniture and Craft Products for the Export Market
CV Nuansa Kayu Bekas, a company based in Solo, Central Java, has captured the attention of the international market with its recycled wood furniture and craft products made entirely from recycled wood. Utilizing materials often considered waste, the company transforms them into functional and aesthetic works of art, ready to decorate homes around the world.
Starting with a vision to reduce wood waste and address environmental issues, CV Nuansa Kayu Bekas was founded by Rani Permata Sari, a wood craftsman with a background. Through a promotional event at an exhibition, she recognized the immense potential of recycled wood, which is often wasted.
Through meticulous collection, sorting, and processing, this wood is transformed into elegant and durable furniture products that are highly sought after by international buyers.
"We want to demonstrate that recycled wood has extraordinary value when processed properly. In addition to helping reduce deforestation, our products also offer a unique aesthetic not found in new wood," said Rani, who is also the Deputy Chairperson for Domestic Promotion of the Indonesian Furniture and Craft Industry Association (HIMKI).
CV Nuansa Kayu Bekas's products include various types of furniture such as tables, chairs, cabinets, and shelves, as well as wooden crafts such as statues, photo frames, and other home accessories. All of these products are handmade by experienced craftsmen, ensuring the high quality and uniqueness of each item.
The international market is highly responsive to the products offered. They value sustainability and the stories behind each product. "This motivates CV Nuansa Kayu Bekas to continue innovating and maintaining quality," Rani added, explaining that European buyers used to import dozens of containers of furniture and crafts made by CV Nuansa Kayu Bekas per month. However, since the war broke out, the number has been reduced to five to six containers per month. They don't want to stock large quantities of goods. This is why sales to the European export market have declined.
However, Rani doesn't want to rely solely on the European market. She has also begun targeting Asian markets. To reach this new market, Rani, under the banner of CV Nuansa Kayu, has been promoting her business by participating in furniture and crafts exhibitions in Hong Kong.
"And thank God, from participating in the exhibition in Hong Kong, we have found buyers from Japan and Korea who are interested in purchasing CV Nuansa Kayu Bekas's furniture and crafts," Rani said with a beaming face.
Rani is grateful for the new buyers from these Asian countries, which have allowed her furniture and crafts industry to survive and cover all costs, including paying wages.
Rani revealed that her recycled wood furniture and craft products have passed SVLK certification, a requirement for raw materials used in a product.
Rani said that so far, her products have been 100% exported to Europe and the United States. However, due to the ongoing conflict (war), she is targeting the Asian market, with Japan and South Korea as her first step.
Rani explained that the domestic market is also quite attractive and has considerable potential. However, her company has been focused on exports to European and US countries for so long, leaving the domestic market largely untapped. This is despite the fact that 10 furniture and craft products from CV Nuansa Kayu Bekas have received TKDN (Domestic Content Level) certification from the Ministry of Industry.
This demonstrates that the furniture and craft products produced by CV Nuansa Kayu Bekas meet the requirements to participate in procurement tenders for government agencies, institutions, and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) using funds from the state budget (APBN) or regional budget (APBD). Moreover, after viewing the LKPP e-catalog, the prices offered by government agencies/institutions and BUMN/BUMD can be included with the selling prices offered by the company. (Red)
