Pyramid Book House Architectural
Pyramid Book House/MAT Office. Chengdu, China. Plans, sections, elevations, model-f.28-35. Three pyramid-like shapes define three spaces for reading, displaying books and relaxing. In the evening, the idea of “No matter how late it is, leave the light here for me” brings warmth and emotional expression to the middle part, and during the day, its glass ceiling creates a sense of open space through views from inside and outside. High pitched roofs and skylights provide bright lighting for the “Book House”.
The outer walls of the book house are clad in wooden shingles, this use of local materials harmonizes with the rural area, responding to the tradition of the Chengdu plain. It is located in a typical rural landscape surrounded by suburban communities. “The Book House”, one of a series of “Pyramid Book Houses” in Wenjiang District, aims to transform public libraries into places for reading.
The entire “Book House” is built with a simple wooden structure. The posts used as beams and columns are not only a structural framework but also define the interior space; pine plywood is used not only for the wall cladding but also for the decorative finish of the interior walls and ceilings; wooden shingles on the walls protect the small building from erosion during rain, while at the same time it meets the eco-friendly characteristics.
At first, the residents entered and looked around, and then spontaneously began to read and explore the interior. The small book house has become a place for everyday communication among the villagers. It is common to see adults basking in the sun while children run and play on the grass around. On weekends, several young people from the nearby urban areas also come here to relax and have fun.
When night falls, this small building seems to be a "book tower" rising from the flat landscape, and a bright beacon warming the people floating on it.
The location of this modest book house, a public welfare project we completed recently, is in Wanchun Town, Wenjiang District, Chengdu. The area is bordered by suburban and rural towns and features a typical agricultural environment. The bookshop is part of Wenjiang District's "Pyramid Book House" series. The "Pyramid Book House" is dedicated to providing reading services in public libraries, fostering a cultural life with the motto "No matter how late it is, leave a light here for me," and providing the community with warmth and emotional acknowledgment as a top-notch livelihood service plan.
The book house is a makeshift structure situated near Tuanjiequ Road's green belt. This design uses three geometric forms that resemble pyramids to distinguish the three primary areas for reading, displaying, and relaxing. In addition to forming the book house's architectural shape, the steeply sloping roof lets in plenty of natural light. A glass roof connects the three volumes, giving the impression of being outside thanks to the open interior and exterior space. The book house's external walls are covered in wood tiles; this utilization of regional resources complements the rural neighborhood and the Chengdu Plain's traditional material features.
This public benefit project requires low-cost construction, which also helps to explain its straightforward and obvious architectural outcomes. The entire book house is constructed with a straightforward timber framework, and we have foregone any structure handovers that may raise costs. The pine plywood serves as both the wall enclosure structure and the decorative surface of the interior walls and ceilings; the wooden tiles hanging on the walls protect the small building from rain erosion while also complementing the temporary building's green and renewable features. The flinches used as beams and columns serve as both the structural frame and interior spatial definitions.
After it was finished, the book house soon turned into a picturesque location beside the village's road. The nearby rural people eventually became accustomed to this little structure that appeared out of nowhere. They began reading and investigating inside on their own initiative after initially glancing around as they went by. In the remote hamlet, the little book store has also developed into a regular gathering spot. Adults are frequently observed lounging in the sun as kids run and play on the nearby grass. Some young people from neighboring cities also stop here on weekends for amusement and pleasure.
